The Princess and the Pauper
Performed in the summer of 2013, The Princess and the Pauper was our inaugural production. It was also the first to feature an original score by Jordan Brazeal. A feminization of Mark Twain’s classic, The Prince and the Pauper, this musical comedy spotlighted a day in the life of Elizabeth I (certain poetic licenses were exercised), a street urchin named Meg, and a pair of bumbling beefeaters… among many other colorful, unforgettable characters.
Plot Synopsis
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to trade places with someone for just an hour? Well, Elizabeth I, the great queen of England, was granted that wish when she and Meg Canty, a poor pauper from Pudding Lane, switched roles. Havoc ensues when their little scheme goes terribly awry; Elizabeth is forced to spend the night in miserable quarters, while Meg is shut up behind palace walls. While Elizabeth struggles to survive a life of squalor, Meg nearly suffocates in a world of splendor beyond her imaginings. Despite plot twists and the schemings of power mongering conspirators, both Elizabeth and Meg learn what it is to see the world through someone else’s eyes, an experience that grants them a greater understanding of compassion.
